Just half a year after its launch on the German market, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 won the "German Car of the Year 2022" (GCOTY) award. In the final round of this important poll, the electric CUV from Hyundai won over the competition in the form of the Audi E-Tron GT and the Porsche 911 GT3.
At the German Car of the Year awards, top car models compete in five categories: "Compact", "Premium", "Luxury", "New Energy" and "Performance". An international jury consisting of 20 automotive journalists tests and evaluates each vehicle in terms of its features, importance and prospects for the future. As the winner of the "New Energy" category, the IONIQ 5 participated in - and subsequently won - the final round.
"Hyundai IONIQ 5 is not only an exceptional electric car. For us, it is the top model of this year," says Jens Meiners, founder of the poll and member of the "German Car of the Year" jury. "The unique combination of design, efficiency and driving pleasure helped the IONIQ 5 score above average in all criteria without showing any weaknesses. In our eyes, the concept of operation and the technology of the IONIQ 5 batteries are groundbreaking. And although it is the "German Car of the Year 2022", the IONIQ 5 definitely has global appeal too. "
"The IONIQ 5 winning this award in such a highly competitive environment proves that we have succeeded in creating an exceptional vehicle that stands out among its competitors in the European car market,” says Michael Cole, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe. "This win also shows that battery electric vehicles are becoming more and more relevant for our customers in Europe. The IONIQ 5 is currently a key model in our electrification strategy and further supports Hyundai's vision of zero-emission mobility."
Hyundai IONIQ 5: A new era of electric mobility
IONIQ 5 is the first model that Hyundai launched under the new IONIQ brand. The IONIQ 5 is built on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), Hyundai Motor Group's platform for battery electric vehicles. Customers can choose between two battery capacities – 58 kWh or 72,6 kWh – and all-wheel or rear-wheel drive. The version with rear-wheel drive and 72,6 kWh offers a maximum range of 481 kilometers per charge according to the WLTP.
IONIQ 5 provides high performance and ultra-fast charging. Thanks to 800 V charging technology, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes at fast charging stations. Customers can also use Vehicle to Load (V2L) technology to charge any electronic device while driving or parked, such as laptops or e-scooters.
In addition to a wide range of drive options, the IONIQ 5 also offers an exceptional interior. Natural materials underline the sustainable character of the vehicle. The electrically adjustable front seats can be reclined to an optimal ergonomic angle, offering the passengers in the front seats a feeling of weightlessness and support for the lower limbs. The vehicle is equipped with 12,25-inch dashboard and infotainment screens. The center console and rear seat can be moved to allow customers to use the interior space even more flexibly. IONIQ 5 can also tow braked trailers with a total weight of up to 1 kilograms.
Like all Hyundai models, the IONIQ 5 is available with a five-year unlimited mileage warranty. In addition to this vehicle warranty, the high-voltage battery is also covered by a warranty of 8 years, or 160 kilometers.
